UEFA CL: Bayern Serge To Final As Gnabry Shines

Bayern book their spot in Champions League Final for first time since 2013

Former Arsenal midfielder Serge Gnabry ensured Bayern Munich continued their relentless passage through this season’s Champions League as the German scored twice in the Bavarian clubs 3-0 victory over Lyon. Robert Lewandowski came with the Bundesliga champions third, as they booked their place in Sunday’s final.

Hansi Flick’s side made it through to what will be their 11th appearance in the final of the European showpiece competition where they will face a showdown with another French side, Paris St-Germain – who made it past their own German opponents RB Leipzig by the same scoreline on Tuesday.

The German champions have been outstanding since the resumption of football and with this comes their 10th straight Champions League win, they equaled the record for winning streaks in the competition set by Real Madrid in 2015 and Bayern themselves in 2013. They will break the record should they win the competition on Sunday night.

In truth, Bayern did not have things all their own way as the scoreline might suggest, they rode their luck in the early exchanges as the French Ligue 1 side started the match on the front foot, including one glorious chance for Memphis Depay in the early minutes. However, they squandered their opportunities and after hitting the post, moments later Gnabry put Bayern in front with a thunderous left-footed strike from the end of the box.

From that moment on Flick’s side began to flex their muscles, it wasn’t long before they doubled their advantage. This time a less thunderous strike was required as the man once described as ‘not good enough for West Brom’ by Tony Pulis, as Gnabry followed up Lewandowski’s close-range effort to tap home from no more than a yard out.

Following the half-time interval, the French side came back into the match and once more had their chances, however, they were unable to test Manuel Neuer to the maximum and with just two minutes remaining on the clock, Polish striker Lewandowski finally grabbed his customary goal to put the icing on the semi-final cake.

Despite Bayern Munich’s dominance in recent months, PSG will have been buoyed by watching their French counterparts have some joy up against the German defence. Bayern will have to remember Neymar, Mbappe and co. may not be as forgiving as the Lyon front-line.

The final looks set to be a showdown of epic proportions as two attacking teams go head to head for the greatest prize in European football.
