England v Pakistan: Test Drawn as Rain Wouldn’t Go Away

Following an abundance of rain and bad light breaks England and Pakistan played out a frustrating draw in the second Test at the Ageas Bowl.

The result had been inevitable for a long period of time given the time lost, however, the bright sunshine on the final day allowed the match to at least conclude on the field.

On the first morning, Pakistan captain Azhar Ali won the toss and elected to make first use of the pitch and bat first, despite the less than pleasant forecast. Opener Abid Ali batted well for his 60 whilst an eventual Man of the Match performance from Mohammad Rizwan with his impressive 72, steered the visitors to 236 all out, albeit the innings spanning across four days.

Stuart Broad with four and James Anderson with three were the picks of the hosts’ bowlers as the match stalled a halt.

Following the conclusion of the first innings of the match, England batted in the post-storm afternoon sun on Monday. After Rory Burns continued his questionable form when he was dismissed earlier for a duck, Zak Crawley made 53 and Dom Sibley 32 but both fell in consecutive Mohammad Abbas overs.

Leg-spinner Yasir Shah removed Ollie Pope as the day drew to a close, England captain Joe Root and Jos Buttler were at the crease with the scoreboard at 110-4 when Azhar Ali brought himself into the attack, one delivery later the teams were fist-bumping to signal the end of a frustrating second Test match.

After only 134.3 overs in the match, this Test ranks as the shortest Test in England since 1987.

All this now means England will take a 1-0 lead into the third and final Test, which begins on Friday also in Southampton where everybody will be praying for a change in fortunes from the weather.
