World Snooker Championships Reaches Quarter Finals

The delayed World Snooker Championship has reached the quarter-final stage at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield. Played without crowds although the early rounds did see spectators following a trial. With plenty of former winners of the prestigious title still left in the draw, the competition is hotting up nicely towards the latter stages.

Three-times champion Mark Williams booked his place in the World Championship quarter-finals following his 13-11 victory over Englishman Stuart Bingham. Welshman Williams outclassed Bingham who fought hard to stay with the 45-year-old, however, Williams prevailed and goes on in search of his fourth World Championship crown.

Another three-time winner Mark Selby came through a nail-biting final-frame decider to beat World number 42 Noppon Saengkham 13-12. The 28-year-old Thai Saengkham pushed Selby all the way before the Englishman finally came through with a break of 124 in the final frame.

World number 43 Kurt Maflin gave himself an early birthday present as he came past the legendary John Higgins 13-11. The Scotsman and four-time champion John Higgins made a maximum 147 break but could not avoid a shock defeat. Norway’s Maflin, 36, will be confident going into his last eight encounter after coming past many people’s favourite for the tournament Higgins.

World number one Judd Trump came through a nervy round of 16 clash to reach the quarter-finals, eventually getting past 20-year-old Chinese player Yan Bingtao. Trump has swept aside all before him this season and despite some worrying moments, he came through this test as well and will hope to add the Crucible crown to a long list of accolades this season.

Australian potter Neil Robertson came through his match with Barry Hawkins by four clear frames as he advanced 13-9 over his English opponent. Former World Champion and current World number two Robertson will now face Mark Selby in the last eight.

Kyren Wilson continued his rise to prominence as he reached the quarters with a 13-9 victory over the experienced Martin Gould. The 28-year-old has to withstand a spirited fightback but he came through as the eventual winner, to face Judd Trump in the next round.

In what had been a heated battle and at times an attritional match between Anthony McGill and Jamie Clarke, it was the Scot McGill who advanced after winning the final frame decider. The two players had been embroiled in arguments and safety battles during the longest match of the round before the 29-year-old McGill clinched the final frame and with it the match.

Fan favorite and ever-controversial Ronnie O’Sullivan did he talking on and off the table as he reached yet another major quarter-final. He came through his match with China’s Ding Junhui 13-10, ‘Rocket’ Ronnie in fine form towards the end as the finished with two big breaks to seal the victory. However, it was in his post-match interview which will steal the headlines. When asked about the reasons behind his longevity in the game, the multiple major winner seemed to mock the lack of quality coming from the younger players, therefore their inability to knock the likes of himself and other older statesmen off.
