All London Championship Play-off Final

Dubbed by many as the ‘World’s Most Lucrative Football Match’, this year’s Championship play-off final will be an all London affair, as Fulham face Brentford in a winner takes all clash for a place in the Premier League for 2020/21.

The stakes don’t come much higher than in the Championship play-off final, with one team destined for top-flight football next term, and all the riches that come with it. Whilst the other must try once more to fight their way out of the increasingly difficult league to exit in the right direction.

The Road to Wembley

Both capital city clubs had obstacles to overcome on their way to the final. Brentford had to come from behind in the final match at Griffin Park, following their 1-0 loss in the first leg away to Swansea.

Despite running into a 3-0 lead in the home leg on Wednesday night, another Rhian Brewster goal got the Swans right back into the match with 10 minutes remaining. The Liverpool loanees lobbed effort became his 11th of the season after arriving at the Liberty Stadium in January.

Steve Coopers Swansea side threw everything they had, kitchen sink included, at the Bees. However, Thomas Frank’s side hung on for the final whistle to secure their spot in the Wembley showpiece.

On Thursday it was Fulham’s turn to make hard work of proceedings, With a two-goal advantage from their own trip to South Wales to face Cardiff, it seemed the home leg at Craven Cottage would be a mere formality.

Neil Harris’s Cardiff took an early lead to shock the hosts, however, when Neeskens Kebano leveled moments later it seemed a formality once again. Anything but as it turned out.

Moments after half time substitute Lee Tomlin’s smart volley put the Welsh side in front and needing one goal in the remaining 40 odd minutes to force extra time.

In the dying moments Cardiff striker Robert Glatzel blazed over on the full volley inside the Fulham penalty area, and that was to be the final chance as Scott Parker’s men clung on to celebrate, although Parker gathered his squad in the middle for what seemed a telling off.

With both teams now just 90 minutes, plus the possibility or extra time and penalties away from the Premier League, Tuesday’s final is sure to be a blockbuster affair, despite both sides rather stumbling their way into the final.

Should Fulham earn promotion it would be a return to the top flight at the first time of asking. Brentford meanwhile aims to play Premier League football for the first time, as well as bringing top-flight football to their new stadium which they will move into at the beginning of next season.
