Jon Rahm moves into top spot in world golf rankings overtaking McIlroy as world number one

On an action packed day of golf, Spaniard Jon Rahm claimed his fourth PGA Tour victory and with it the World Number one spot.

The win means Rahm is the first Spanish golfer since Seve Ballesteros to reach the top of the rankings; this was after Rory McIlroy finished T32nd.

Final Round Overview

Starting the day with a four shot advantage after an unbelievable 68 on Saturday, Rahm opened with four straight pars before play was halted for nearly 50 minutes due to the threat of lightning on another hot and humid day in Ohio.

When play continued the Spaniard holed an eight-footer at the fifth and added a two-putt birdie at the seventh, which extended his lead to eight strokes at the turn after nearest rival Ryan Palmer bogeyed the sixth and eighth.

Rahm and Palmer’s last victories on Tour actually came when the duo were paired together at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in 2019 and, going into the back nine, it seemed that Rahm was cruising to victory.

But Rahm’s lead was to be cut severely as a wayward drive at the tenth resulted in a first bogey of the day for the 25-year-old.

He would then find water off the next tee on his way to a double-bogey seven, as Palmer converted a 12-foot birdie at the 12th to cut the lead to four.

The American then moved a stroke closer with a par at the 14th, as Rahm missed a six foot putt for par.

With his lead down to three, Rahm then produced the shot of the day after going long off the green at the par-three 16^th. He went on to hole his pitch from the rough for a birdie two.

However, the drama continued as the birdie turned into a bogey post-round after the PGA Tour issued a two-shot penalty for his ball moving before the shot.

On the 17^th Rahm’s lead increased further when Palmer three-putted. This left Rahm with a comfortable cushion heading down the last as he made par to claim one of the biggest wins of his career.

Notable Performances

American Ryan Palmer produced his best performance of the season as he finished solo second in Ohio. The 43-year-old had closed the gap to three shots over the back nine but a bogey on the 17^th scuppered any chance of victory.

Englishman, Matt Fitzpatrick, produced the round of the day with an outstanding 68. The four-under round catapulted the 25-year-old to a season’s best finish.

The duo of Jason Day and Matt Wallace finished in a tie for fourth, as both men produced season best finishes as well.

Former World Number one Rory McIlroy endured a painful day as the Northern Irishman shot a six-over round of 78 and, in the process, lost his Number one status to tournament winner Rahm.
