Championship Matchweek 43 Round Up
Leeds take big step as relegation battle heats up
Matchweek 43 of the Championship kicked off on Friday and came to a close on Sunday with Leeds edging towards the Premier League. Here we roundup all you need to know from matchweek 43 of the Championship.
Fulham confirm play-offs as Luton continue revival
On Friday night Nathan Jones’ return to Luton Town continued to show improvement as they beat Huddersfield 2-0. It may eventually be too little too late for Luton in their fight to avoid the drop. Although, the signs are promising for an immediate return to the Championship.
In Friday’s other fixture Fulham booked their play-off place with a 2-0 home victory over Cardiff City. The prolific Aleksandar Mitrovic and young forward Josh Onomah on the score-sheet for Scott Parker’s men.
Thank you very much to all @FulhamFC supporters worldwide & thank you so much to the squad & staff for this great win today! 4 wins in a row, 3 straight clean sheets! West Brom slip as Brentford close in
On Saturday, West Brom were the first to blink in the race for automatic promotion as they dropped points away at Blackburn. Filip Krovinović had swept Slaven Bilic’s side into the lead, but substitute Joe Rothwell equalised moments after coming on by converting a Sam Gallagher cross. Just one point then for West Brom, leaving them just ahead of the dangerous Brentford.
Brentford made it six wins on the trot since the restart, seven if you go back to their last fixture in March. It was the on-fire Said Benrahma’s second half brace that secured the 3-1 win over Derby County for Brentford. The Bees now sit just three points behind automatic promotion and within striking distance of West Brom.
Sheffield Wednesday transformed their recent fortunes to run out 3-0 winners away at QPR. Goals from Dominic Ifora, Josh Windass and Jacob Murphy doing the damage for the away team.
In a battle of two play-off contenders, Preston and Nottingham Forest couldn’t be separated. An early Lewis Grabban penalty for Forest was matched by a Jayden Stockley strike just ten minutes later. The game finished 1-1, leaving Preston a little off the pace.
Elsewhere on Saturday; Neil Warnock’s Middlesbrough were helplessly beaten at home by Bristol City. City ran out 3-1 winners thanks to a Nahki Wells double and Jamie Paterson. Britt Assombalonga’s eighth goal of the season was merely a consolation for Middlesbrough.
Around the other fixtures there were one nil away wins for Millwall and Reading, beating Hull City and Charlton respectively. Also, the relegation encounter between Barnsley and Wigan ended goalless.
One step closer for Leeds
Just two fixtures remained for Sunday and it was Leeds who stole the show once more. The Yorkshire club moved yet another step closer to the Premier League, thanks to a late Pablo Hernandez goal. The 89th minute winner enough to beat Swansea 1-0, and move Marcelo Bielsa’s men three points clear at the summit.
In the only other match Stoke City were too strong for Birmingham who now slip nearer the drop zone. First half goals from Danny Batth and Sam Clucas gave Stoke an unassailable lead at halftime at the Britannia Stadium.
The action gets going once more on Tuesday this week as clubs move into the final three round of fixtures. West Brom host Fulham in the pick of the midweek matches.
