Lewis Hamilton on pole ahead of Styrian Grand Prix
Qualifying was in doubt throughout the day after torrential rain saw Free Practice cancelled in the morning. It didn’t look promising as qualifying was delayed 46 minutes from the original starting time.
However, the three sessions finally got underway and we were treated to a spectacle.
Lewis Hamilton was in top form, taking pole in Austria and was fastest in all three sessions, finishing 1.2secs ahead of Max Verstappen.
McLaren continued to impress after an impressive display last weekend, with Carlos Sainz on the second row, joined by Valtteri Bottas.
Renault’s Esteban Ocon had a fantastic qualifying session by finishing 5th with Lando Norris in 6th.
Alexander Albon was disappointed in the opening race after being spun by Lewis Hamilton, but continued to struggle in the wet conditions, finishing in 8th. Pierre Gasly will partner him on the fourth row.
Daniel Ricciardo crashed in yesterday’s second practice session, damaging the rear of the car. However, Renault were able to get the car fixed and helped Riccardo finish 9th, 0.4secs ahead of Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel.
Poor Day for Charles Leclerc
Ferrari’s struggle continued after failing to get both drivers out of Q2 for a second consecutive weekend. Charles Leclerc failed to show real pace at the slippery Red Bull Ring, and will start 11th on the grid.
The story of the day was Williams as George Russell managed to qualify for session two and finished 12th, the highest position the British driver has managed in his F1 career.
Racing Point’s – the Pink Mercedes – performance was affected by the rainy conditions, seeing Lance Stroll start 13th and Sergio Perez 17th on the grid.
Kimi Raikkonen failed to get out Q, finishing 16th, as his teammate, Antonio Giovinazzi, pulled up at the side of track, forcing Red Flags to be waved and Q1 finish a few minutes earlier.
Haas saw two disqualifications last weekend and qualifying was not much better for the American team. Kevin Magnussen starts 15th on the grid, whereas Roman Grosjean will start 20th after problems with the car.
Final Standings:
1st – Lewis Hamilton
2nd – Max Verstappen
3rd – Carlos Sainz
4th – Valtteri Bottas
5th – Esteban Ocon
6th – Lando Norris
7th – Alexander Albon
