Liverpool close in on points record

Liverpool’s Egyptian King, Mohamed Salah, scored twice as the champions continued their pursuit of a record-breaking points tally. Liverpool beat Brighton 3-1 at the Amex Stadium to move nine points from surpassing Manchester City’s Centurions.

An early pressing masterclass from Naby Keita and clinical finishing from Mohamed Salah and Jordan Henderson drove the Reds’ closer to their objective. A spirited Brighton side, in search of their highest points total in the Premier League, provided Liverpool with more than enough to think about. However, with the introduction of Sadio Mane and Fabinho in the second half, the visitors took control once more.

Ultimately, Graham Potter’s men could not stop the champions. After conceding two early goals they showed courage and purpose in possession. They also managed to threaten the defence, before finally getting back into the game through Belgian Leandro Trossard.

It was Salah once more, whose near post run wasn’t tracked, who headed home from an Andy Robertson corner. Salah’s header wrapped up yet another three points for Liverpool, putting them on 92 points.

Salah, who sits three goals behind Golden Boot leader Jamie Vardy, bagged two last night and would have been disappointed not to complete his hat trick. The forward now has 100 goal involvements in 104 Premier League appearances for the Merseysiders, scoring 73 and assisting 27. He missed a golden chance late on, however, when he headed over from a Robertson cross.

Mohamed Salah has now scored 73 Premier League goals for Liverpool, 71 more than he managed for Chelsea.

Keita steps up as Henderson suffers late injury

Guinean midfielder Naby Keita’s impressive performance was well timed, as rumours linking England’s best team with Thiago Alcantara have been circulating for a number of days. The Spanish midfielder looks set to leave Bayern Munich, and Liverpool are amongst a number of potential suitors.

One negative from the champions’ evening was the departure of Jordan Henderson. The captain limped off after 80 minutes following a collision with Yves Bissouma that appeared to injure his knee. He will now go for a scan in the coming days to discover the extent of the injury.

Jurgen Klopp’s men now need to win three of their remaining four games if they wish to break the record. They face Burnley at home on Saturday. Brighton, on the other hand, now face the prospect of a travelling Man City, late on Saturday. The Seagull’s will be looking to rubber stamp their Premier League survival following an impressive restart.
