Chelsea beat Lille 2-1 to finish second in Group H

All was to play for in Group H this evening with Ajax, Valencia and Chelsea all fighting for a spot into the last 16. Chelsea needed a win to guarantee qualification in Group H whereas Lille, only playing for pride, sat bottom of the group with just one point from the five group games in the Champion’s League.

Frank Lampard’s side started on the front foot pushing for an early goal to settle the nerves. This came in the 18th minute, Willian sending a low cross into the six yard box for Tammy Abraham to easily slot it into the net.

Chelsea doubled their lead in the 35th minute thanks to a Cesar Azpilicueta header, the Blues captain making the run to to leave himself unmarked in the six yard box, converting the header with a powerful precise finish from the Chelsea corner.

Lille scored late on in the 78th minute with former Chelsea forward Loïc Remy drilling the ball into the roof of the net from 12 yards out.

Despite the late Lille goal Chelsea dictated possession and attempts on goal, seeing them come away with the 3 points.

Chelsea finish second in Group H and progress into the last 16 along with first place Valencia.

The draw for the first knockout round takes place on Monday 16 December in Nyon at 11am UK time. The draw will be shown live on BT Sport.
