Liverpool finish top of Group E following solid performance away to RB Salzburg

Liverpool went into their last group game needing just a point to qualify whereas current Austrian champions FC Red Bull Salzburg needed a win to avoid crashing out of the group. Liverpool needed a win to guarantee a top spot finish in group E, therefore Klopp picking a very strong Liverpool side to avoid any scares.

It was a frantic start for both sides with both keepers having to make a flourish of saves in the first half. Norwegian hot property Erling Braut Haaland tested Alisson and Virgil Van Dijk in various spells. Haaland went into tonight’s game in fine form, scoring in all five of the previous Champions League games averaging a goal every 37 minutes.

Liverpool however broke the deadlock in the 57th minute with a Naby Keita header, Sadio Mané drawing the keeper in before crossing with precision onto Keita’s head.

Less than 90 seconds later Mohamed Salah doubled Liverpool’s lead with an outstanding piece of skill, managing to find the back of the net from a seemingly impossible angle on his right foot.

Liverpool closed out the game with a convincing perfomance, the home side looking very dejected following two Liverpool goals in quick succession.

This result see’s Salzburg slip out of the Champion’s League and now fall into the route of the Europa League. Whereas for Liverpool they now finish top of Group E and head into the last 16. Napoli also go through with Liverpool in Group E after placing second.
