Willian? Giroud? Hojbjerg? – Players Tottenham Hotspur will be hoping to sign this Summer

How Will Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur Line-up Next Season?

It’s no secret that Tottenham Hotspur Football Club are not the biggest spenders when it comes to the transfer market.

Not only that, but the financial implications of the coronavirus outbreak will also further complicate the club’s transfer business.

Free agents, swap deals, loan agreements and players in the last year of their contract will be the hot topic this summer in the Lillywhite half of North London.

With Club Chairman Daniel Levy negotiating a £175 million loan from the Bank of England last week, which he claims will not be used for transfers, these three options might be the only way for Spurs to gain players this transfer window.

The appointment of the serial winner, including three Premier League trophies, Jose Mourinho last November might however see Spurs do some surprising business in this window.

Let’s take a look at the players Tottenham Hotspur will be hoping to sign this Summer:

Willian (Chelsea)

Having backdoored his Spurs medical to sign for Jose Mourinho at Chelsea in 2013, Willian is a rather controversial figure in the eyes of the Spurs board.

He is now, however, a free agent at the end of the season; a situation that ticks all the boxes for the club’s hierarchy.

The current Spurs squad is slightly overloaded in that position, such as fellow Brazilian Lucas Moura for example, but his stint at Chelsea has seen him win several trophies, including two Premier League titles, one of which was under Mourinho in 2015.

Some fans agree that the Brazilian’s best days are behind him but he’s worked with the ‘Special One’ before, understands his philosophy and he will no doubt bring that winning mentality that Tottenham so desperately need.

I believe that this signing is a no brainer for Tottenham; he’s free, knows the manager well and will add a different dimension to the dressing room.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (Southampton)

With one year left on his contract, Southampton Captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is a player Tottenham are crying out for.

Eric Dier’s recent decline in form and his decision to play, once again, as a central defender has seen the holding midfield position become vacant.

Hojbjerg, 24, fits Spurs’ transfer ethos brilliantly; he’s cheap, young and will benefit the team greatly.

Valued at around £20 million, Mourinho did try to sign the Denmark international during the January transfer window this season but both Hojbjerg and his club didn’t want him to leave mid-season.

This transfer seems logical for the club and with Kyle Walker-Peters already on loan at Saint Mary’s, there are talks of him going the other way permanently in a player plus cash deal for Hojbjerg.

Max Aarons (Norwich)

Under Mauricio Pochettino, Spurs scouted Max Aarons extensively last season.

The England under 23’s right-back is currently contracted to Norwich City and is shining in their squad despite their current position in the league table.

With the sale of Kieran Trippier to Atletico Madrid last Summer and loaning out Kyle Walker-Peters in January, Tottenham are in dire need of a new right-back to strengthen the depth of that position.

There is no doubt that Serge Aurier is the man of choice for Mourinho but Tottenham have no reserve for that position and have had to utilise academy graduate Japhet Tanganga when Aurier hasn’t been available.

Pochettino was a great fan of the 20 year old while the Canaries played in the Championship but with their promotion to the Premier League, Norwich simply would not sell at a price Spurs were willing to pay.

Mourinho is also said to be a huge fan of the Englishman, particularly during his performance for the canaries, which saw them knock Spurs out of the FA Cup this season on penalties.

The ‘Special One’ has since organised a friendly with Norwich for this Friday (12th June 2020) to ready his squad for their fixture against Manchester United on Friday 19th June.

But there is speculation that the friendly is also for Jose to take another look at the defender.

Again, this is another no brainer for Tottenham Hotspur and with the highly likely scenario of Norwich City returning to the Championship, Spurs should be able to buy Aarons for far less than his £30 million valuation by the Canaries.

Eberechi Eze (Queens Park Rangers)

Another England under 23’s international, Eze of the Championship side Queens Park Rangers has been on Tottenham’s radar for some time now.

The club has a very healthy relationship with QPR as they currently have loaned out England under 23’s internationals Jack Clarke and Luke Amos to Mark Warburton’s side.

Eze was another favourite of Pochettino’s and once again Jose is said to be a great fan of the young star.

He has performed tremendously well for QPR in the last two seasons and would be a fitting successor to Dele Alli should he leave the club in the future.

Unless a deal involving Amos and Clarke going the other way is agreed, I can’t really see this as a priority for Tottenham for this window.

Jose is a great admirer of Eze but the ‘number 10’ role is one that can already be fulfilled by a host of players already at the club.

Spurs will most likely not pursue their interest in Eze as they need to spend the little money they have on priority positions.

Olivier Giroud (Chelsea)

With only one year left on his contract, Giroud, yet another Chelsea player, is being linked to Tottenham Hotspur.

The departure of Fernando Llorente last Summer saw Spurs without an experienced center-forward this season as a back up for Harry Kane.

A reserve striker is a player the club is crying out for; someone to relieve Kane when the team is winning comfortably and someone to play that number nine role when Kane is unavailable.

The North London side did attempt to sign him in January when Harry Kane became injured but Chelsea simply would not sell to benefit a direct rival.

He would have been a free agent, like Willian at the end of the season, but the Frenchman opted to execute the one-year extension clause in his contract.

However, this does not necessarily mean that he will remain at Chelsea next season.

Chelsea most likely did this to recoup some of the £15 million they paid to Arsenal back in 2018 under Antonio Conte.

The inbound of Timo Werner from RB Leipzig could inherently see Giroud miss even more game time as he is slotted further down the pecking order.

Despite Frank Lampard’s reluctance to benefit a direct rival, I believe it is extremely likely that Daniel Levy will at least try to gain Giroud’s signature this Summer transfer window as Spurs are in dire need of a backup striker.

Especially when the Frenchman has years of Premier League experience and will be available at little cost due to his contract situation.
