Champions League New 2024/25 Format
Champions League New 2024/25 Format
The Champions League is set to undergo a major transformation starting in the 2024/25 season, with an expansion in the number of matches from 125 to 189. The new format includes a league phase that will now conclude in January instead of December, meaning there will be weeks dedicated entirely to Champions League matches without conflicting with other European competitions. The winning team will have played a total of 17 matches in the tournament, with games scheduled on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays as the new adoption norm for Europe’s elite club competition.
How the New Format Works
A noticeable change is that at least 10 out of the 36 clubs participating in the league phase will be from Italy and Germany. The total number of teams will rise from 32 to 36, some good news for Ontario sports betting and the global betting fraternity. The traditional group stage will be replaced by a single league phase involving all teams. Each club is guaranteed to play at least eight games against eight opponents during this stage with four home matches and four away games compared to the previous format where teams played six matches against three opponents on a home and away basis.
The top eight teams in the league will secure qualification for the knockout rounds.
Teams that finish between 9th and 24th will have a chance to compete in a two-leg playoff for a spot in the last 16 of the competition. This new format is designed to inject excitement and competitiveness into the Champions League.
The following teams are set to participate in the league phase of the revamped Champions League.
