What To Know About The Kentucky Derby 2022

With one of the biggest horse races just around the corner, it is time to do your homework and learn more about this special event that is the first leg of the Triple Crown races.

According to TwinSpires, the competition in the Road to Kentucky races is heating up and we can start to see favorites coming up the table.

About the Kentucky Derby

The Kentucky Derby is one of the longest-running horse races in the world (from 1875), that managed to stay alive even through the Great Depression.

The Kentucky Derby is an annual horse race that usually takes place the first Saturday in May. Last year the event was involved in controversy after the winner Medina Spirit was disqualified following a scandal involving a failed drug test. The horse, however, died two months before the decision was known.

The organization of the event took measures, banning the trainer Bob Baffert from the future events hosted in Churchill Downs. So, we hope this year is less controversial and the competition is fairer.

This special event is a Grade I Stakes race for three-year-old thoroughbreds and it stands for one of the most prestigious races in the world where champions are born.

This year’s Kentucky Derby is scheduled for May 7th and fans are really excited to see some of the best horses racing down the finish line.

Kentucky Derby Qualifying

Obviously, not every horse can participate in the Kentucky Derby. The qualifying process begins a couple of months before the main event, and it features smaller races where participants gather points. As the competition is heating up and the progress of the qualifying races gets closer to the Kentucky Derby, the point values increase.

For example, the competition starts with 10 points for the winner and finishes with a boost of up to 100 points for the winner.

Historically, horses that earn at least 40 points get to participate in the big event.

Kentucky Derby Participants

Even though we are only two months away from the big event, the qualifying process is still going and there may be some changes when it comes to which horses will participate in the Kentucky Derby.

With that said we will highlight some of the horses with the most points, which are already considered favorites.

Classic Causeway

Classic Causeway is trained by Brian A. Lynch and despite not winning any major two-year-old races; it is on the right path for getting the ultimate title, the Kentucky Derby trophy. In his last two appearances, Classic Causeway managed to finish 1st both in II and III graded races.

Epicenter

Epicenter is another great horse that managed to gather 64 points so far and is clearly one of the favorites for winning the main event. It is trained by Steven M. Asmussen and has a great history of races that finish 1st in three out of four appearances.

Un Ojo

Un Ojo is another great horse that has a good chance of appearing at the Kentucky Derby even though we don’t have enough data to compare it to others. In his last two appearances, Un Ojo managed to grab 1st place in Rebel Stakes and 2nd place in Withers Stakes.

Since we are approaching the end of the qualifying and points significantly increase, everything is possible. The final prep race in the Kentucky Derby qualifying is scheduled for April 16 at Keeneland. After this race, we will have the top 20 earning horses that will participate in the Kentucky Derby.

What to Expect at this Year’s Kentucky Derby

Clearly a lot of glamour. This year’s Kentucky Derby race will be followed by thousands of cheering fans live at Churchill Downs and millions on their TV screens.

We can expect that the competition will be tough and it wouldn’t surprise us if we see an underdog taking the throne. Most horses didn’t appear in a lot of races before, which makes it very difficult to predict whether or not they run to their full potential.

Either way, it is going to be a fun experience, so make sure you pick up your favorite horse to cheer for, do some research, and place some bets to make the entire process even more exciting.
