Title Contenders

Last season Emma Hayes’ Chelsea were awarded the title on a points per game basis and are in a strong position to win a record third consecutive title. Despite having a number of players involved in the Olympics, who may potentially still be recovering, Hayes has a squad that is constantly evolving and improving. With Australian Sam Kerr leading their attack, they always have the chance of scoring, whoever their opposition.

Manchester City have a squad possessing a great deal of gifted players that could be capable of competing with Chelsea. Gareth Taylor grew into the job last season after making a slow start, which ultimately cost them the title. The squad possess talent at both ends of field and showed that Taylor was able to motivate and innovate during last season. Unfortunately they have lost Sam Mewis but have added to their squad with the addition of Jamaican forward Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw and Spanish midfielder Vicky Losada, who joins from Barcelona. If they can continue their momentum from last season then they might just win the league.

Arsenal are the other team that could be capable of mounting any realistic title challenge this season. Under new boss, Jonas Eidevall, who replaces Joe Montemurro, they are looking to improve on last season’s third place finish. With legendary forward, Vivianne Miedema, the Gunners have a world class talent who can unlock any defence. They have added to their squad with the signings of Japanese international, Mana Iwabuchi and Nikita Parris, who joins from Lyon. If Jordan Nobbs can overcome her pre-season injury, she will prove invaluable in the midfield this season.

Potential Dark Horses

Both Manchester United and Everton could prove to be this season’s surprise package. United only missed out on Champions League football to Arsenal by a single point last season, so they would want to build on that success. However, they have lost manager Casey Stoney as well as World Cup winners, Tobin Heath and Christen Press. They might repeat last season’s fourth place finish, but Everton are going to be pushing them hard. Manager Willie Kirk has signed French international Kenza Dali, Swedish internationals, Anna Anvegård and Nathalie Björn from Rosengård. Toni Duggan also returns to Everton after an 8 year absence, joining from Atletico Madrid. If French forward, Valerie Gauvin can regain fitness after recent injury problems the. the Toffees should be targeting a higher finish than last season’s fifth place.

Relegation Candidates

Birmingham City are a club that look to have it all to do this season. They lost their talented coach, Carla Ward, to local rivals, Aston Villa, after she managed to keep them up last season. City lack the quality required at both ends of the pitch to be competitive this season and they will need their rivals to falter if they are to avoid the drop. Newly promoted Leicester City are somewhat of an unknown quantity at this level and will be hoping to scrape enough points together to retain their Super League status next season. Tottenham Hotspur could also find themselves at the wrong end of the table this season, as they lack a goal scorer last season, with their four joint-top scorers only netting twice in the entire campaign.
