Scott Brown: A Glass Half-Full

From pursuer to the pursued, his career has travelled full-circle.

The newly-appointed Aberdeen FC player-coach readies himself for the challenge, as the 2021-22 Scottish Premier League Campaign unfolds.

Success has been a byword for Dunfermline-born Scott Brown, since debuting (aged 17), for boyhood club Hibernian back in May 2003.

At Easter Road; Brown was viewed as a work-in-progress, amid the youthful revolution facilitated (in part), by chief scout John Park.

In his breakthrough Season – 2003-04, Hibernian progressed to the Scottish League Cup Final – defeating both Celtic & Rangers on route. Despite an uncharacteristic reversal (to Livingston FC), in the Hampden showpiece, sunshine was optimistically forecast on Leith.

The following season, (under progressive head coach Tony Mowbray); Hibernian galvanised their undoubted potential. They gained qualification for the UEFA cup, by virtue of securing their highest placed league finish (3rd), for some time.

Scott Brown secured his first major trophy success, in season 2006-07, when Hibs overwhelmed Kilmarnock FC – 5-1, to lift the Scottish League Cup.

With their reputation enhanced, Brown and his peers attracted interest from clubs north and south of the border. And in August 2007, the 22-year-old opted to join Celtic FC, for a fee of £4.4 Million.

Unprecedented success followed at the famous Glasgow outfit, with Brown establishing himself as the most successful Celtic skipper of the modern era. Indeed, during his 14-year stint (eleven as captain), Scott Brown lifted no-fewer-than 22 domestic trophies – including a quadruple treble in Seasons 2016-17, 2017-18, 2018-19 and 2019-20.

The former Scottish Internationalists’ decision to reunite with ex-Hibs team-mate Stephen Glass at Pittodrie; has been received with scepticism in some quarters.

However, only the foolhardy would bet against further success befalling the most decorated Scottish footballer of recent times. And perhaps the Scottish League Cup, can provide a realistic and fitting early target for the novice pairing.
