Poirier gains the upper-hand in the McGregor Trilogy at UFC 264

Dustin Poirier claimed a second successive victory over Conor McGregor this year via TKO in round one at UFC 264 in Las Vegas.

Referee Herb Dean ended the fight at the end of the first round after Conor appeared to have fractured his lower leg trying to plant it on the canvas, following a mistimed punch.

There was animosity heading into the fight with both fighters trading words, following on from a much more amicable second fight earlier this year. Words were exchanged both via social media as well as during fight week, with McGregor switching his stance, reverting back to his “king of trash talk” moniker. After the fight it appeared there was no love lost between the two lightweights, with Poirier having to be separated by security as words were exchanged between the pair.

The fight got off to a promising start for the Irishman as he started the fight with both spinning leg kicks and a guillotine on his opponent before Poirier would grow into the round with his impressive ground-work which was followed by a series of punches and elbows.

The doctor’s stoppage then followed at the end of round one and Poirier was given the victory in which he retains his number one contender ranking in the Lightweight division and a possible title opportunity in the future. Former Lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov who has had his previous battles with McGregor, who also faced Dustin in their title bout in 2019, certainly thinks Dustin is deserving of a championship opportunity.

Elsewhere on the main card, there were first round victories for Sean O’Malley, Tai Tuivasa and Irene Aldana, as well as a decision victory for Gilbert Burns in the co-main event against Stephen Thompson in the Welterweight division.
