Four goals and mission complete by England in Rome

England are through to the semi-finals of the European Championships for the first time since Euro 96 as they thrashed Ukraine by four goals to nil in Rome.

Two goals from Harry Kane, Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson helped the Three Lions advance to the semi-finals where they will face Denmark on Wednesday night, who beat the Czech Republic 2-1.

Southgate before the game made two changes to the squad that beat Germany from Tuesday as they reverted to a back four and changed the formation to a 4-2-3-1.

It didn’t take long for England to take the lead as Kane put the ball in the back of the net after three minutes, from Raheem Sterling’s brilliant pass in the box.

England continued to put pressure on the Ukrainian defence throughout the first half and could have scored more as Sancho’s effort was saved in the penalty area.

Ukraine didn’t create much and were not a threat to the Three Lions’ defence, Shevchenko’s side didn’t do enough to punish England in key moments and were on the back foot throughout.

It wouldn’t take long after the start of the second half before England would score again and it would be Maguire to do so from a brilliant set-piece delivery into the box by fellow Manchester United team-mate Luke Shaw.

Shaw who was effective from left-back, would get another assist as his cross in the area was met by Kane as he headed home his second in the game and England’s third on the night.

The night was rounded off by Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson as he scored his first ever goal for his country as he headed home from a Mason Mount corner and helped England put the game to bed.

England will not only have home advantage once again in the tournament but also set their sights on their first tournament final since World Cup 1966, with only Denmark left in their way next Wednesday evening for the semi-final.
