Euro 2020: England vs Germany Preview
England will be looking to beat Germany in the knockout stages of a major tournament for the first time since the World Cup final in 1996, as they face each other at Wembley at 5pm this evening, live on BBC One. England come into the game unbeaten, without conceding a goal so far at the tournament. While Germany, have tasted a victory, a draw and a defeat, there win however, was a 4-2 win over reigning champions Portugal.

Ticket restrictions have been relaxed slightly, meaning 40,000 fans will be inside Wembley. Both sides will be hoping to progress into the quarter final where they will face either Sweden or Ukraine in Rome.
England have only ever won a knockout tie at the European Championships once, which came in 1996, where they beat Spain on penalties. Before losing to Germany on penalties in the semi-finals. That loss to Germany on penalties remains the only time England have lost at a major tournament on home soil.

Germany are unbeaten in their last seven matches against England at Wembley, winning five and drawing two. If they are to lose this evening, it will be Joachim Low’s last match in charge of Germany, after fourteen years as manager of the national team.
England’s record against Germany in major tournament knockout ties looks like this:
- 1966 World Cup final: Won 4-2.
- 1970 World Cup quarter-final: Lost 3-2 AET
- 1990 World Cup semi-final: Lost 4-3 on penalties after 1-1 draw.
- 1996 European Championship semi-final: Lost 6-5 on penalties after 1-1 draw
- 2010 World Cup last 16: Lost 4-1
Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell is expected to be in contention for the match. However the pair have been training away from the rest of the squad due to fears of contracting Covid-19after coming into close contact with Billy Gilmour. The Scottish international returned a positive test following England’s 1-1 draw with Scotland.
As for Germany, Chelsea defender Rudiger and Manchester City midfielder Gundogan are both expected to be fit after missing training over the weekend due to a cold and a head injury respectively. Thomas Muller is also expected to replace Leroy Sane after recovering from a knee injury.

- This is the third meeting between the two nations at a European Championships. The last two meetings ended in a Germany win on penalties in 1996, and a 1-0 win for England in the group stages at Euro 2000.
