Euro 2020: France vs Switzerland Preview

France will have to overcome their current injury crisis if they are to beat Switzerland tonight in Bucharest. Didier Deschamps will be without both left-backs Hernandez and Digne who both came off injured in their final group game against Portugal. Dembele is also now out of the tournament after a knee injury, while Thuram, Lemar and Rabiot are all nursing injuries.

Switzerland on the other hand, have a full squad fit for the match, and come into the game off the back of a 3-1 win over Turkey. While France come off the back of back to back draws against Hungary and Germany.

France came out winners in what was described as the group of death, without losing a game. They managed to pick up a combined four points from Germany and Portugal. As for Switzerland they qualified as one of the four best third-placed teams, racking up four points in group A.

The winner will go onto play either Croatia or Spain who play in the early kick off this evening.

Head-to-head

  • This will be the first time France and Switzerland have met in the knockout rounds of a major tournament. Although they have met five times in the group stages. France are unbeaten in all five games, winning two and drawing two.

 

France

  • France have only lost one of their last seventeen matches at major tournaments (winning 12, drawing 4). The match they lost was the Euro 2016 final against Portugal.
  • Their unbeaten run dates back two years, with their last loss coming in June 2019 against Turkey in the European Championship qualifiers. Since then they have won fourteen matches and drawn five.
  • Forward Antoine Griezmann has played in each of France’s last fifty-one matches, which has lasted since August 2017.

 

Switzerland

  • Switzerland have progressed out of the group stages at each of their last four major tournaments. They were eliminated in the first match following the group stage in their last three tournaments (Euro 2016, 2018 World Cup, Euro 2020).
  • After his brace against Turkey, Liverpool’s Xherdan Shaqiri became Switzerland’s all-time top scorer in major tournaments with seven goals. He is now also their top scorer in European Championships with three goals.
