EURO 2020: France suffers multiple injuries
Didier Deschamp’s lineup was considered to be a top contender in the pre-tournament stages of Euro 2020. However, after the group stages and several crucial injuries, the stock of the team has fallen significantly.
Before the knockout rounds, France are facing severe injuries as the squad crisis becomes worse. Forward Ousmane Dembele has been the first to be ruled out for the rest of the tournament after a knee injury that he sustained in the match against Hungary. Dembele came on the second half as a substitute, but his influence was evident. After losing the young winger, Deschamp is now facing two more injuries from Thomas Lemar and Marcus Thuram.
According to France’s medical staff, the two wingers limped out of the training session. They were also facing serious discomfort on the training ground before the match with Portugal.
Atletico Madrid’s forward, Lemar, had to be helped off the pitch by the staff members of Les Bleus. On the other hand, Thuram had an apparent groin injury as he collapsed during the practice sessions.
Both wingers will have the weekend to recover before their first match of the knockout stages vs Switzerland. Even if both players are healthy by the match, it is uncertain whether Deschamp will decide to play them and risk their health further.
The medical staff of Les Bleus are also concerned about the left-back Lucas Digne. Digne was substituted in the second half, but minutes after he came into the game it was obvious that he felt upset and in pain. Just after minutes of playing he left the field. According to Deschamp and the medical staff, Digne is being monitored but has sustained a “complicated” muscle injury.
To make matters worse for Les Bleus, Lucas Hernandez, whom Lucas Digne initially replaced, also had knee issues after the game.

Pressure on Deschamp
In total, this makes for 5 injured players for France. Ousmane Dembele is out indefinitely, but as for the rest, there is no underlying information confirming whether they will play in the rest of the tournament or not. Although France have an easier match-up in the face of Switzerland, suffering 5 injuries will definitely bring out tactical issues for Deschamp.
He said in a statement that “we don’t want to do any calculations because we don’t want to take any risks. We have seen everything could change very quickly in this group. Of course, we didn’t do everything well all the time and we can improve some things.”
Clearly, there are many issues ahead for France. Although they remain the favorites for the European title, there are many concerns regarding their squad depth. All the pressure rests on Deschamp’s shoulders. He has to come up with new offensive schemes and change up the rotations due to the missing injured players.
