Scotland star Billy Gilmour tests positive for Covid-19

Chelsea and Scotland midfielder, Billy Gilmour, will miss Scotland’s crucial final group game against Croatia on Tuesday due to testing positive for Covid-19.

The 20-year-old, who’s been labelled ‘The Scottish Xavi’ was a standout performer in Scotland’s game against England on Friday night. It was Gilmour’s first start for his national side, in which he won the man of the match award. After his team’s outstanding performance against England, Scottish fans have a reason to be hopeful for qualifying for the next round of the tournament. However, the loss of Gilmour in their midfield will come as a blow.

The Scottish FA have said that there are no close contacts identified in the squad and that manager Steve Clarke will have 25 fully fit players to choose from to face Croatia. The Scots must win at Hampden Park on Friday night to have any hope of progressing in the tournament.

Both Croatia and Scotland have 1 point heading into the game, while Czech Republic and England have 4, meaning the winner of that game, also on Friday night will end top of the group. If Scotland are to progress to the next round of the tournament, Billy Gilmour would be ruled out of playing in their last-16 match due to his 10 day isolation period.

There has been fears for England players since the news of Billy Gilmour’s positive Covid-19 test result, after playing against Gilmour on Friday, however all members of the England squad and staff returned negative Covid-19 tests on Sunday.
