Euro 2020: Scotland firm and strong in a vital draw at Wembley
Scotland put on a valiant performance to frustrate England at Wembley and give Steve Clarke’s side a glimmer of hope of qualifying out of their group at Euro 2020.
In a match which has so much history and with pride at stake, a victory for the Three Lions would guarantee them a place in the last 16 whilst a Scotland win would give them hope of qualifying out of Group D.
It was the away side that pressed the home-side early on and it didn’t take long before they imposed themselves in the game, with a Che Adams shot blocked by Declan Rice in the penalty area.
England then started to grow into the game and create chances, almost taking the lead through a set-piece as John Stone’s header hit the bar from a corner.
The home team had two significant chances in the opposition box as a Mason Mount shot from a Sterling cross went wide, in a chance in which he felt he should have scored. Shortly after Phil Foden was given offside despite showing immense ball control in the area in the lead up to his shot going a whisker wide.
Despite England’s possession and their threat going forward, the Tartan Army remained firm, resolute and were even unlucky not to take the lead as O’Donnell’s volley in the box forced England number 1 Jordan Pickford to make a good save.

At the start of the second half, Southgate’s side continued their dominance like they did in the first, as Mount’s effort from outside the area was saved with Reece James’ follow up going over the bar.
England were given a huge let off as Southampton striker Adams, who was a constant threat up-front with his hold up and build up play, took too long to get a shot off in the area with Stones doing enough to put him off.
The home team counted themselves very fortunate as Dykes’ effort from a Scottish corner was headed away by James.
With Grealish and Rashford coming on to brighten things from an attacking point of view, it didn’t do much to ease tension for the England fans and Che Adams almost made things worse with his attempt on goal going over the bar.
Despite a little rally from the Three Lions towards the end of the game, it wasn’t enough to help England win the game, denying themselves the opportunity of qualifying for the last 16. Southgate’s England will now have to wait a little longer to do so.
The next game for England is against the Czech Republic at Wembley whilst Scotland have it all to do at Hampden Park against Croatia with both matches taking place Tuesday evening.
