Josh Taylor becomes Scotland’s new Undisputed Champion

Josh Taylor achieved two knockdowns to beat Jose Ramirez by unanimous decision to become the undisputed Light-Welterweight champion.

The Scottish fighter would win the bout 114-112 on all three of the judges’ scorecards at the Virgin Hotel in Las Vegas on his way to a historic victory.

Taylor in his eighteenth fight, becomes the first Scottish fighter since Ken Buchanan to become an undisputed world champion and the sixth person in history to become the undisputed champion in the four-belt era.

Tale of the Tape

Ramirez and Taylor came into the fight looking to make history despite animosity between the two fighters during the build-up, with the two confronting each other at the press conference and almost coming to blows afterwards.

In the earlier rounds of the fight, it was Josh Taylor who had the better start of the two fighters as he dominated with the jab in the first two rounds.

Ramirez, who started to grow into the fight especially at the end of round two and into round three, was beginning to gain success with shots to the body in which was troubling Taylor.

Round four was the most entertaining of the rounds as both men went back and forth with their punches with the two even punching each other simultaneously towards the end of the round.

Taylor would score the first knockdown in the fight early in round six as he gave Ramirez a left-hand counter to the jaw and would score another one again in round seven with an uppercut from a clinch.

Going into the later rounds, Jose tried to respond with the combinations, with Taylor giving the left-hook in round ten and standing his ground, despite a late surging effort from the home fighter.

The two knockdowns took a lot out of the American-Mexican fighter and was enough for the Scotsman to make history in Las Vegas.

What next for Taylor?

Jack Catterall is touted to be Josh Taylor’s next opponent in a possible homecoming fight at Edinburgh Castle whilst a possible rematch with Ramirez also beckons. Another option is a potential big bout with Teofimo Lopez or even the possibility to go up to welterweight, as Taylor’s options remain open.

With Taylor becoming the king of the 140-pound division, the Scotsman has cemented himself in becoming one of the best fighters in the world and putting on one of the great performances by a British fighter on foreign soil.
