Match Report: Spurs 1 – 2 Aston Villa

Aston Villa left Spurs’ european hopes for next season hanging on a thread as they came from behind to beat a ultimately lack-luster Tottenham.

It started off so brightly as well, with Steven Bergwijn, who was brought into the starting eleven for the match, winning the ball off Nakamba, holding off 2 or 3 defenders before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the top right corner in the eighth minute. Martinez never had a chance.

Aston Villa then responded brilliantly to going one down and penned Spurs back, their pressure was rewarded as they leveled the scoreline, yet in a most unlikely way. As a cross came in from the left, Sergio Reguilon made an attempted clearance but instead sliced at it. As a result the ball flew freakishly into the opposite corner of his net, spinning away into the goal. This was in the 20th minute.

In the 39th minute, Reguilon had the chance to clear away from the right corner of the pitch. His clearance this time was blocked, and it fell fortunately back to him. But with his second clearance it was once again blocked, and then controlled. Eventually it fell to Watkins, who then headed it into space and shot finished it emphatically.

For the first time this year, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was open to fans, with 10,000 attending. And their second main action (after celebrating the goal) was to boo off the Spurs players.

In the second half Spurs came back stronger and Martinez made a good string of saves as Villa held strong under Spurs pressure.

And it payed off, as they eventually held out to win  2-1.
