2021 Champions League final moved to Porto
UEFA have this morning announced that the 2021 Champions League final will be held in Porto, having initially been planned to take place in Istanbul. The Estádio do Dragão will play host to the two Premier League sides on the 29th May.
With Manchester City and Chelsea bidding to become European champions, the match has been moved to favour English supporters. Portugal sits on England’s green list which therefore means that players and fans can attend without having to quarantine on their return home. Whereas Turkey is one of the 43 countries placed on the red list which enforces a travel ban.
There had been clamour from fans to hold the final on British shores, with Aston Villa offering to hold the fixture at Villa Park. UK government officials and the Football Association reportedly met with UEFA to discuss using Wembley Stadium as the host venue, although they failed to reach an agreement.
Consequently, Portugal will hold a second consecutive Champions League Final following Bayern Munich’s 1-0 victory over Paris Saint Germain in Lisbon.
Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin claimed “To deprive supporters of the chance to see the match in person was not an option and I am delighted that this compromise has been found.”
“After the year that fans have endured, it is not right that they don’t have the chance to watch their teams in the biggest game of the season.”
6,000 fans from either club will be permitted to travel to the fixture, with City looking to win their first-ever Champions League title, whilst Chelsea will be looking to replicate their 2012 final win.
The final capacity limit is yet to be decided.
