Rory McIlroy victorious at Wells Fargo ending 18 month title drought
Rory McIlroy has finally managed to end his 18 month winning drought after securing victory at the Wells Fargo Championship. The former world number 1 eventually won by a single shot and finished 10 under par after starting the day two shots behind American Keith Mitchell. Overcoming a one shot penalty during the final hole of the day in the process.
Following the win, the Northern Irishman gave credit to his swing coaches Pete Cowen and Michael Bannon. As well as being full of praise for caddie Harry Diamond.
A long time coming
The celebrations following the victory in Charlotte, North Carolina, were more of relief than jubilance. With McIlroy coming into the tournament in torrid form and ranked just 15 in the world, his lowest ranking since 2009. Following the victory, McIlroy managed to put his emotions into words by saying:
“There’s relief that I’ve won again, relief that my season is sort of back on track, and more just satisfaction at the journey that I’m on and the process that I’ve been going through to try to get back to this point”
Following a disappointing showing in The Masters and then at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, missing the cut on both occasions, the 32 year old announced that he had added coach Pete Cowen to his Swing coach team. The renowned coach and former Tour Champion joined existing coach Michael Bannon and appears to have had quite the impact on McIlroy’s game.
“The work that Pete and I have done over the last few weeks helped today. I had a couple of things to fall back on, which was really important, especially under the pressure of needing to hit good shots down the stretch, I had a couple of very playable swing thoughts that I’ve had all week.”
Alongside the ever calming and encouraging influence of caddie Harry Diamond, it appears that things are looking up for McIlroy with the USPGA Championship later on this month.
