Sergio Aguero: Who will Replace a City Legend?

Sergio Aguero will go down as a Manchester City legend as well as one of the greatest strikers in Premier League history. Aguero scored a historic goal in the Citizens’ history, winning them their first Premier League title.

Since signing for City in 2011, Aguero has scored 180 Premier League goals, won four Premier League-winning medals and one golden boot. Unfortunately for Pep and City, injuries have limited Aguero’s match minutes of late. It looks like his time may be coming to an end at City, with the focus now turning to who will replace the Argentine goalscorer. Guardiola has stated that “he is a guy who deserves with the club, fair talks to do what is the best for him, for the club and for everyone,” when asked about contract discussion with the South American.

Aguero has often hinted at a move back to Argentina to finish his career at his boyhood club, Independiente. Rumours have hinted towards one final big move for the City forward. Barcelona appears to be on the lookout for a striker after seeing Suarez leave to Atletico in the summer of 2020. Aguero is reported to be at the top of their list for the upcoming summer transfer market and will be available for free if he doesn’t agree to a contract with City anytime soon.

So with a possible end of tenure at the Sky Blues looming and with it an end to Aguero’s dominant reign in the Premier League, we take a look at the potential candidates who have the potential to fill such big boots.

Harry Kane

The England and Spurs captain would be at the top of most football fans lists for their lead striker. It may take a big chunk of money to get Tottenham to sell their prized asset, and you’d expect many teams to be in for Kane. There is also the issue of Kane’s loyalty to Spurs. Kane is a boyhood Spurs fan and captaining his boyhood club may keep the striker there for a little longer.

The striker has an outstanding goal record for Spurs, with over 200 goals in just over 300 appearances. Guardiola has previously praised the English talisman, meaning he may not be against a move for Kane.

Many believe Kane needs to move on from Spurs to make him a world star. The combination of Kane and De Bruyne would strike fear into any defence across the world. The addition of Kane would push City to the next level again and create a seemingly unstoppable force on the attack.

Erling Haaland

One of the hottest properties in Europe at the moment, Haaland is causing havoc in Germany. His record for Dortmund since joining, 43 goals in 43 games, makes the 20-year-old one of the best strikers in world football. Haaland reached 15 Champions League goals quicker than any other player. His goal scoring talent in Europe may be a pull factor for City who are desperate for European success.

Haaland has links with City, his father played for the Citizens so this may play a part in Haaland’s decision. Haaland has always been open to a move to England, the country where he was born.

Though it is fair to say Erling will have plenty of options if he was to leave Dortmund, the key part there being ‘if.’ It has been reported recently that Haaland has a release clause of around £70million but it is believed this may not become active till 2022.

Lautaro Martinez

Martinez is expected to be a straight replacement for Aguero at the national level, however Pep may see him as a replacement for his City side also. Lionel Messi has often been full of praise for his Argentine compadre, hailing Martinez as a spectacular player. His style of play would suit the pressing nature of Pep’s philosophy.

As with any other major striker in football, Martinez will come at a high cost for City. Though Martinez certainly fits the bill as a like for like replacement for Sergio. He possesses great movement that makes him hard for defenders to manage, he is fast and can find the net easily.

Kylian Mbappe

Not always played as an out and out striker, Mbappe is one the best players on the planet at the moment. Mbappe is expected to take over the reins of football once Messi and Ronaldo retire.

At only 22-years-old, Mbappe has already won a World Cup and scored 111 goals in 154 games for PSG. The sky’s the limit for the Frenchman.

If City were able to pull Mbappe away from Paris it would certainly go down as one of the deals of the last decade. The deal would also set City back at least £200million, something they might be reluctant to do in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

Gabriel Jesus

Pep may look to keep costs down this summer by using one of his own. Jesus signed in 2016 and has been a valuable team member. Gabriel has done well stepping in for Aguero when the Argentine was out. Some have questioned his consistency in the City squad and believe this may hold him back from leading the City line.

Gabriel may be looking over his shoulder with the summer approaching. The Brazilian may have expected to start more games with Aguero out for most of this season, however Pep’s rotation and lack of faith in the man has led to him missing out on more matches than anticipated.

Whoever is to join City as their main striker will be joining an already elusive lineup. The chance to play with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva, all creating chances for you, is mouthwatering for any striker.

Another pull factor in any players decision will be Pep. One of the greatest managers the game has ever seen. The tactical mastermind will influence many players decision, though Pep’s style suits some players more than others. If Pep doesn’t feel that a player will fit into his style then he won’t sign the player.

For now, City and their players, including Aguero will be focused on winning the quadruple they still have a chance of winning. If fit, Aguero will play an important role in their battle, with more potential glory to come his way.
