Abu Dhabi Grand Prix – Talking Points

The last race of the 2020 F1 season was concluded at the Yas Marina Circuit. With Max Verstappen leading the pack right from start to finish with the Mercedes of Valtteri & Lewis tucked behind the Dutch driver. The final race on the calendar was mainly uneventful with little to no overtaking to say the least.

Here are some Talking Points from the weekend:

Red Bull Rejoice as Verstappen Wins

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen yet again looked to be the quickest driver this weekend, topping the first & third practice sessions. The Dutch driver finally took his first pole position of the season beating the Mercedes of Bottas by just 0.025 seconds.

With a superb start & with the excellent pace of the Red Bull Max Verstappen won the season finisher. This being Max’s 2nd victory this season after the 70th Anniversary GP. His teammate Alex Albon came home to take 4th after overtaking the Mclaren of Lando Norris early in the race.

Now it’s all up to the Austrian outfit to decide the Thai driver’s future & finally make a decision as to who takes the second Red Bull seat for next season.

McLaren win the Midfield Battle

Coming in the weekend 10 points behind the dominant Racing Point, Mclaren needed a strong finish to take P3 in the Constructors Championship. And with their drivers qualifying P4 & P6, the British Outfit was heading in the right direction.

An excellent start from Norris was an icing on the cake for the team. However Sergio Perez’s retirement on lap 10 was the turning point in the Midfield battle. Now with the only difficulty out of their way & with Lando & Carlos driving unchallenged in their second stint, Mclaren took home P3 in the Constructors proving to be the best of the rest in the Midfield.

Silver Arrows Struggle

Mercedes have been pretty much unchallenged in the 2020 F1 season. However the final race saw Red Bull closing the gap to the Silver Arrows. With 2nd & 3rd on the grid all they needed was a great start. However with Valtteri Bottas’s poor start & the W11’s MGU-K issues both the cars were well behind the Red Bull.

Nevertheless the team had a double podium finish to mark an end to what was an amazing year for them. With Mercedes getting their 7th Consecutive Constructors Title & British driver Lewis Hamilton getting his 7th Driver’s Title in the 2020 season.

Racing Point’s Despair

After an amazing performance in the Sakhir GP & with a 10 points lead over Mclaren, Racing Point looked to be the winner of the Midfield battle. However with Sergio Perez starting on the back of the grid because of a penalty & with Lance Stroll qualifying well behind both the Mclaren’s, they had a tough battle ahead of them.

However the turn of events on Sunday evening which started with the retirement of Sergio Perez because of a power unit issue. And with Lance Stroll finishing 10th in the race saw the team finishing 4th in the Constructors being  just 7 points behind McLaren.
