Sakhir Grand Prix – Talking Points
Sakhir Grand Prix – Talking Points
F1 finally had its penultimate race of the season at Bahrain. With Sergio Perez seizing his maiden win in F1 after what was indeed an eventful & unforgettable race in modern times. Joining Perez was his old team mate Esteban Ocon who finished on the podium for the first time in his career. And with Lance Stroll finishing third it was a double podium finish for Racing point.
Here are the talking points from this weekend:

Mercedes’s Pitstop Disaster
With Lewis Hamilton testing positive for Covid 19, George Russell & Valtteri Bottas held the reigns of the W11 for the Sakhir Grand Prix. A strong qualifying and a good start led to both the Merc’s leading the rest of the grid with a comfortable gap. Things started to fall out of place from the 63rd lap after Jack Aitken lost his front wing leading to a Safety car. This led to Russell and Bottas pitting, with Russell leaving with Bottas’ tyres while Bottas being given his old Hard Compound.
This ended with Russell and Bottas 5th and 6th after the Safety Car, and a left rear puncture for Russell at the 79th lap snatched the British Driver’s chances of finishing on the podium.
Not our day today. ?

Redemption for Perez & Racing Point
Racing point’s last weekend was a disaster with a Double DNF . The team really needed a good result for its fight for P3 in the Constructors Championship. A good start from Sergio Perez saw him momentarily in the 3rd position before being spun by Leclerc. Then at the back of the grid the Mexican driver began his overtaking spree going from P18 to P3. With Mercedes’s pitstop blunder and Renault & Mclaren’s ill timed pitstop the team got its first double podium finish. Thus marking the Sakhir GP as its redemption day in the season.
This time last week, these cars were in a bad way… but just look at them now! ?
Massive respect to every single team member trackside and back at base for making this possible ?

A Lost Opportunity for Red Bull
Max Verstappen looked to be the favorable driver this weekend, with a strong Free Practice Session and third in Qualifying. Things went downhill from the very first lap for the team after Leclerc and Perez’s brawl ended up with Max crashing into the barriers. And with Alex Albon down in 12th the Austrian team was struggling.
While Albon did manage to finish in the points, the team lost a huge opportunity to grab the podium after Mercedes’s pitstop blunder. And with Perez winning the race, the chances of the Mexican grabbing the 2nd Red Bull seat have grown exponentially.

The Mid-Field battle goes to Abu Dhabi
With 194 points, Racing Point leads the battle for the third position in the Constructors Championship . With Mclaren close on their heels just 10 points behind. Renault’s bad weekend at the Turkish GP severely impacted their position in the standings with the team having a 22 points gap to the 3rd placed Racing Point.
What looks to be seen is whether Racing Point can hold on to their 3rd place as we move to the Yas Marina Circuit. Mclaren does indeed have a chance to fight for third place being the only threat to Racing Point. While Renault would be looking to keeping both the Mclaren’s behind them as we enter the final weekend of this season.
