Rhian Brewster transfer: Where should Brewster go?

 

With Sheffield United, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace all rumoured to want Rhian Brewster’s services, would a move be best? Or should he continue his development with the current Premier League holders?

The striker spent the second half of the 2019/20 season at Championship outfit Swansea City and drew a lot of attention from other Premier League suitors. Brewster reconnected with the Swansea boss after working with him at England u17’s. The pair enjoyed another successful campaign, with the striker bagging 11 goals and Cooper reaching the playoffs in his first season in South Wales.

The Englishman was the top goal scorer in England-U17’s World Cup triumph and Cooper was the reason for the decision of the pair to re-join once more. But despite Brewster showing his quality last season, and a promising pre-season back at his parent-club, he was unable to break into Liverpool’s matchday squad against Leeds United.

So, should he stay, or should he go?

 

Sheffield United

It has been reported that Chris Wilder is interested in Brewster and talks have been held with an offer expected to be made by the end of the week. Wilder has explicitly stated that if he signs a striker, then this would be the ‘best (transfer) window we have had since I have been at the club’. And Brewster is their number 1 target. But would a move to south Yorkshire suit Brewster? And simply, the answer is yes.

Wilder has a track record of crafting young players into Premier League stars that receive international recognition. The Blades manager seems to be trusted by the big clubs to do the same to their young prodigies, with the likes of Dean Henderson and Ethan Ampadu coming from Manchester United and Chelsea, respectively. But after an incredibly successful season last season, the one thing they missed was an out-and-out goal scorer.

Lys Mousset and Oli McBurnie shared the title with 6 goals, so Brewster will have no problems with game-time at a club that will be pushing for a place in the top 6 – and Brewster will fill that void. Sheffield United will be getting, potentially, one of England’s finest strikers in years to come. And when they have been competing in the top-flight for a few seasons, it could be a perfect match.

 

Aston Villa

Despite splashing £33 million with add-ons for Brentford striker Ollie Watkins, Dean Smith is still keen to add Brewster to his ranks. After missing out on Callum Wilson, Aston Villa have emerged as one of the more interested clubs for his signature.

Villa’s previous record signing, Wesley, only managed a sub-standard 5 goals in 22 games before suffering an injury that put him out for the rest of the season. Mbwana Samatta only managed to score twice and Keinan Davis is still without a Premier League goal. So, if Aston Villa are to stay up again after returning to the Premier League last season, their strikers will need to transition into goal scorers. This is where Brewster steps in.

Both Brewster and Watkins have proved last season that they know where the net is, but can they replicate that at the highest level in English football? Only time will tell. Brewster might not start every game, but he would gain valuable experience in a team that are looking for more than just survival in years to come. But does Brewster want game time now, which other clubs can offer? Or is he looking further into the future?

 

Crystal Palace

There are aspects of a move to south London that would appease the striker, but would also make the other destinations more desirable. Brewster grew up in London and spent his youth days at Chelsea, and only being 20, a move back to London could boost his development. With the guidance of the experienced Roy Hodgson also, he could be knocking on the door of an England call up.

Crystal Palace also have a considerable amount of talent in their ranks; Wilfried Zaha, Eberechi Eze, Andros Townsend and Jordan Ayew to name a few. Brewster would find himself in a team that could push for more than just mid-table and with players that he could learn a lot from. But game time could also be limited.

The arrival of Michy Batshuayi on loan for a second stint in the capital, along with Jordan Ayew, means that Brewster would play a supporting role; a role he is already fulfilling at Liverpool. However, a move to the capital would give Brewster a safety buffer. He will get a season of adapting to Premier League life with loanee Batshuayi leading from the front, with the intention of eventually filling that gap.

 

Liverpool

It has been rumoured that the striker does not want to leave Merseyside – and that could well be the case. The Liverpool faithful have been outspoken on social media and have showed their distaste towards letting one of England’s brightest prospects leave for less than £30 million. Brewster has always found himself behind Roberto Firmino and Divock Origi in the pecking order – and he might have had enough.

Gareth Southgate has previously stated that players would be selected on form, and not on reputation, so Brewster will need regular game time if he is going to knock on that door. And with the proposed buy-back-clause that will be installed within any transfer agreement, maybe now is the best time to say goodbye to the reds. But, it would say a lot about Brewster as a professional if he were to leave. He could stay at Liverpool on a healthy wage and pick up medals or go elsewhere and simply play football.

 

So, where should Rhian Brewster go?

With Brewster more than likely returning to Anfield when he is more complete – a move away will suit the Englishman best. Regular game time is what he needs – but where? We believe the answer is: Sheffield United. Chris Wilder has proven that he can get the best out of young, British talents. But more simply, Brewster will find himself finishing higher up in the league table than Aston Villa and Crystal palace.

The striker will most likely lead the line for Wilder act as the Blades’ number 9. Sheffield United’s style of play will also suit his game. With the high push of the wingbacks, Brewster will be allowed more time in and around the box – meaning more goals. It would not be surprising if he were reaching double digits this season and posing as a threat to Tammy Abraham, Danny Ings and Callum Wilson for a spot in the England squad.
