How To Be a Considerate Golfer: 6 Easy Tips

Who doesn’t love playing at their favourite golf course and enjoying watching their golf ball soar across the course? However, it’s important that you don’t get so caught up in your enjoyment that you come across as rude or arrogant.

The pros are not always the most considerate golfers – they may know about the complexities of the game but don’t necessarily pay attention to the things that make them a considerate golfer.

If you don’t want to follow this path, read on to learn the 6 golden rules that are key to being a considerate golfer. We’ll cover the etiquette mistakes golfers often make and how to avoid them!

1. Pace of Play

There are a range of tactics you can use to improve your performance on the golf course, including some that can make a huge difference to your form and strategy. However, at the same time you need to be conscious of other people on the course, and the two things are not mutually exclusive!

Notably, three ways to perfect your pace while being considerate are:

  • Pre-shot preparation can help you get ready for a power play, but make sure that you are not distracting anybody in your group. A couple of preparation shots can do wonders for your pace and form.
  • Do not mark your scorecard first. Instead, play straightway on the tee.
  • Walking unnecessarily slowly can get in the way of others who are using the course. You mustn’t race around the golf course, but don’t amble around either.

2. Respect the 90-Degree Rule

It’s important to be aware of this rule, which essential says that golf carts must to stay on designated paths to protect the fairway turf. On days when the course is wet, golfers will be asked to follow the infamous 90-Degree Rule.

This rule states that carts must maintain a 90-degree angle from the cart path while they are on the fairway. Players must opt for a cart path that leads to the spot parallel to the ball, then make a right-angle turn and drive toward the ball.

3. Know Where to Stand

This may seem obvious, but you will be surprised to know how many seasoned professionals don’t know where they should stand. The most basic rule is to never stand close to somebody who is teeing off.

All golfers have a certain preference, but most golfers want other players to be in front of them in their field of vision, rather than behind them, while they are playing. It’s also important not to do anything distracting.

When you are playing in the sun, it is always nice to try to help follow the flight of the ball. Stand a little further down the line, behind the player, and try to pick the flight up early.

4. Don’t Make Distracting Noises

Golfers are always in their head before teeing off, and even the slightest of noise or the most minor distraction can easily throw them off their game.  It’s important to be conscious of what you are doing and how that may be affecting the players around you.

Jangling coins, doing up a zip, chatting with others, clanking your clubs, or tees knocking together in your pocket can be extremely distracting for the players. Golf courses are the epitome of a peaceful environment and such sudden noises can be very distracting.

5. Keep Your Temper Under Control

Golf can be a very stressful game for many people and some players lose their temper when they miss ashot. However, throwing your clubs, screaming and yelling at people around you, sulking, and making everybody uncomfortable is never the decent thing to do.

Everybody has moments of frustration, especially in sports, but it’s important to keep your cool. The trick is to express your emotions in an inoffensive way. Always be respectful and mindful of those around you.

6. Try to Look Your Best

The world’s best golf players are always meticulous about how they dress and present themselves on the golf course. This game requires high-level skills, but sharp dressing and proper gear will give you the strong boost of confidence you need to ace your game.

Every remarkable player, from Walter Hagen and Ben Hogan to Bobby Jones and Tiger Woods, shows up to the course in neatly pressed garments and impeccable golf gear. Pay attention to how you dress and present yourself – this is part of being a considerate golfer!

Final Words

Golfers are not trained overnight – it takes years of practice and careful observation to learn the formal and informal codes of conduct on the course. It is vital for every aspiring player to understand that skills alone won’t make you a seasoned golfer.

At the end of the day, golf is all about having fun in a tranquil, calm environment. So, don’t disrupt the peace with avoidable mistakes. Let other players enjoy their game and have fun too!
