Blockbuster Summer Football Transfers

Blockbuster summer football transfer deals are always a great talking point and with Euro 2020 in the books, speculation is going into overdrive! We have separated these rumoured deals into those that are almost completed (probable) and those that require further negotiations (possible).

Probable Summer Football Transfers

Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur to Manchester City/Manchester United/Chelsea)

When Harry Kane announced he wanted to leave Spurs everyone knew his services would be in demand. Daniel Levy is a shrewd negotiator and will not let Kane leave on the cheap, but he apparently gave the England frontman his word that he would allow him to leave. Manchester City have reportedly made a £100 million bid, which was rejected, but given his form at Euro 2020 they could return with an improved offer. Chelsea have been watching events from afar and should they fail to sign Haaland (see below) they might step in for Kane. However it is Manchester United that repeatedly seem to be the favourites to sign Kane, with Solskjær keen to add to the £73m signing of Jadon Sancho.

£150m Kane fee plummets as Levy buckles, leaving Man Utd in pole position

Raphael Varane (Real Madrid To Manchester United)

This deal is apparently all but signed and delivered. Varane is seemingly not in Ancelotti’s plans and Manchester United are looking for a solid defender to partner Harry Maguire. As he enters the final year of his contract at Real Madrid they will look to sell the Frenchman, or risk losing him for nothing at the end of the season.

Antoine Griezmann (Barcelona To Atletico Madrid/Manchester City)

The financial crisis at Barcelona has numerous clubs closely monitoring the situation, looking to profit from the Catalans salary cap woes. Barca need to cut their salary bill in order to not only register their new signings (Memphis Depay and Sergio Aguero) but also re-sign Lionel Messi. One high profile star that Ronald Koeman has not ruled out selling is Antoine Griezmann.  One possible destination for the French forward is Atletico Madrid. Barcelona are interested in a possible swap deal with Spanish midfielder, Saul Niguez. ESPN have reported that Manchester City have also stepped up their interest in Griezmann and view him as an alternative striking option to Harry Kane.

Erling Haaland (Borussia Dortmund to Chelsea)

The young Norwegian has repeatedly been linked to both Chelsea and Manchester City. The Blues boss, Thomas Tuchel, wants the club to push forward with a transfer for the striker. Borussia Dortmund are keen to hold on to Haaland for next season and have reiterated their reluctance to sell to player. However, their resolve with be further tested should Chelsea meet their £150 million valuation. It’s difficult to imagine Dortmund turning down such a sizeable offer in the current depressed transfer market.

Possible Summer Football Transfers

Federico Chiesa (Juventus to Bayern Munich)

Bayern Munich boss, Julian Nagelsmann is extremely interested in bringing the 23 year old Italian to the Bavarian club. Chiesa is valued at around €60 million, which could price him out of a move to the German champions. Furthermore, the forward is currently on loan at Fiorentina until the end of next season, which also complicates a possible transfer this summer. Juventus have expressed a desire to keep Chiesa, but should a large enough offer be made, they might be persuaded otherwise.

Kylian Mbappe (Paris Saint Germain To Real Madrid/Liverpool)

No discussion of blockbuster summer transfer deals would be complete without discussing the French forward’s future. With only a year left on his current contract these discussions are becoming more urgent. Mbappe has apparently requested that a clause be inserted in his new PSG contract that allows him to join Real Madrid, should they bid for the striker. Real Madrid will need to sell players in order to not only raise funds for the the transfer, but also to make room for his salary. Alternatively, Liverpool have interestingly emerged as another option for Mbappe. Former French international, Emmanuel Petit, believes a move to Anfield would be “The best fit” for the player. It is clear that the player’s substantial wages will be a significant obstacle in any transfer involving Mbappe.

Lionel Messi (Free Agent To Barcelona/Paris Saint Germain/Manchester City)

A few days before winning the Copa America with Argentina, Lionel Messi was reportedly offered a contract by PSG. The French giants feel uncertain about the future of Mbappe, so are investigating the possibility of signing Messi, who is currently a free agent. This move would depend on Mbappe signing for another club, otherwise there is no way the Parisians can pay Messi’s wages and stay within the salary cap. Manchester City also remain another possibility for Messi and they came very close to signing the Argentinian last summer. If Barcelona fail to free up enough salary cap space, a move to either PSG, or the blue side of Manchester, could be a distinct possibility.

Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus To Paris Saint Germain/Manchester United)

Euro 2020 Golden Boot winner, Cristiano Ronaldo, is reportedly keen on a move to PSG. The Portuguese superstar is extremely motivated to win another Champions League and feels that Juventus are not going to be competitive next season. Again, like with any possible Messi transfer, this depends on salary cap space. Another club that are keen on securing Ronaldo’s signature are his former team, Manchester United. The Red Devils apparently made a £17 million offer for the forward to bring him back to Old Trafford, 12 years after he left for Real Madrid. Conflicting information about any possible transfer has emerged, with the Gazzetta dello Sport reporting that Juventus has opened negotiations with Ronaldo on a one year extension to his current deal.
