UFC 257 – Poirier vs McGregor 2: Preview

Dana White and the UFC have started 2021 with a boom, offering fans another genuine fight of the year contender in January. This comes little than a week later, after the highly impressive Holloway vs Kattar fight, also featuring at the Etihad Arena on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi.

Max Holloway put on a boxing clinic in his matchup against Calvin Kattar. It is fair to suggest that Holloway displayed one of best performances in his already very impressive MMA career. A fight that went the distance could have very easily been stopped in the 4th round, as Kattar was both figuratively and literally up against it. Holloway proved that he still is one of the best featherweights around, despite coming up second best in his last 2 bouts to the current UFC featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski. Evading strikes from Kattar, whilst shouting towards the commentary team in the 5th round, capped off an impressive evening from the 29-year-old and will go down as an iconic moment in UFC history.

The standard has well and truly been set for the year so far, all eyes now turn to Poirier and McGregor.

Last time out for McGregor

McGregor’s last UFC bout was on 19th January 2020, in a contest that took place in less familiar settings of the welterweight division. A dominant performance, which saw him named victorious in 40 seconds against the veteran Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone, feels not so long ago. However, his last contest at lightweight was all the way back in October 2018, which saw him defeated at the hands of the men’s UFC pound-for-pound number one Khabib Nurmagomedov. McGregor will look to set the record straight in a quest to once again become lightweight champion, starting with his fight this weekend against Dustin ‘the Diamond’ Poirier.

Threat of Poirier – second time’s a charm?

The two met back in 2014 under very different circumstances. McGregor was victorious last time when the two faced off at featherweight, in what was a convincing 1st round TKO. However, with much more experience and looking more natural at lightweight, Poirier could be a serious threat to McGregor in the rematch.

It can also be argued that Conor looks more determined than ever, and his training camp believes he is in the best physical condition he has ever been in. One thing is for certain, it will be an intriguing contest that millions will be watching around the world.

Where to watch?

The UFC 257 pay-per-view takes place this weekend on Saturday 23rd January 2021 at Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. The early prelims kick off the event at 11:30pm GMT. Followed by the prelims at 1am, and the main card scheduled to start at 3am. The main event of the evening between McGregor and Poirier is expected to take place at approximately 5am GMT.
