Lucas Piazon: The Eternal Loanee

Recently Chelsea midfielder Lucas Piazon hit out at the Premier League club for having no intention of utilising him as a footballer and simply seeing him as a commodity who they can loan out time and time again, something not uncommon at Stamford Bridge in recent years.

Piazon, a 26-year-old Brazilian who was signed from Sao Paolo in 2011 told Maisfutebol: ‘After a certain point the connection is no longer beneficial for both parties. At first, I felt really good. I went through the U-23s, got to the first team, and, even in the first loans, I felt Chelsea had expectations and interest in me.’

Currently, on loan in Portugal at Rio Ave in the Portuguese Primeira Liga, Piazon is now facing his seventh loan spell away from Chelsea, having spent time at Malaga, Vitesse, Frankfurt, Reading, Fulham, and Chievo previously.

The Sao Paolo born playmaker continued: ‘I believed I could come back and have opportunities at any time. Later, as time passed, I became just another business for them. They send me out on loan with the expectation of selling me and making some money with me. I think that’s more or less what they think.’

Whilst once considered a talent with a Premier League future it seems unlikely there’s a future at Chelsea for Piazon. Having spent nine years with the club, including two renewed contracts, the Brazilian has made just three appearances for the Blues, just one of which came in the Premier League – way back in 2012/13 during an 8-0 victory over Aston Villa.

However, with over seven years since that appearance, and now on loan once again it seems the end move to suit both parties should be a permanent departure. The question is does Piazon have a point with the South London club’s loan policy, for a number of years the club has stockpiled talent and loaned it across the world in vast numbers, almost on the off-chance players progress and can be of use to the first-team squad.

One thing that is for sure is Piazon’s career hasn’t progressed as he would once have hoped. Heralded as the next Kaka after scoring 10 times in seven Brazil Under 15 appearances, he has found himself kicking around the lower reaches of Europe’s top flights and really needs to kickstart his career once again.
