Crawford on the look out for next bout

Terence Crawford has built a name for himself as arguably the number one pound for pound fighter in the world. The Nebraska native has an impressive record of 36-0-0, including 27 knockouts. His bout against challenger Egidijus Kavaliauskas saw him defend his title, and now people are wondering who will be Terence Crawford’s next opponent.

The conditions

Joe Tessitore said of Crawford’s last fight against Egidijus Kavaliauskas,”it can get real expensive when you’re training for Bud Crawford, you gotta pay for southpaw sparring and orthodox sparring”. Crawford’s ability to transition between both stances is one of the key reasons he is unbeaten. Couple that with his ability to counterpunch with speed and you get an incredibly dominant professional fighter.

Terence has made it clear that when saying that “my contract states I ain’t taking no pay cuts”. Terence is referring to the potential pay cuts he will have to take when fighting behind closed doors.

On his most recent appearance on the last stand podcast, Crawford stated that “I don’t feel that’s right when I’ve already went through what I had to go through coming up. Now you’re telling me go back to Ground 1 and take a pay cut. I just don’t feel like I can do that.”

So who could potentially be Terence Crawford’s opponent in his next fight? Here we take a look at some of the names that are circling.

Manny Pacquiao

Manny Pacquiao has been a target for many young welterweights. He is a future Hall of Famer and people target him in order to solidify their status as a top contender. Terence stated that this “is a fight that we are still currently looking forward to getting”.

Manny Pacquiao is a legend in boxing and in the Philippines, where he is on stamps.

The 32-year-old announced that any top welterweight would be welcome to challenge him for the WBO welterweight championship. However, due to the lack of revenue that fans usually provide with tickets, Crawford doesn’t believe that fighting without fans will work due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The whole thing is going to come down to money if you can’t provide the proper money for each fighter, then how is the fight going to happen”.

Errol Spence Jr

“Errol has stated that he is fine training, nothing is really wrong with him. He is preparing himself for Danny Garcia, so you know after this fight we are all gonna get a glimpse how he will react coming off a car accident of that magnitude, and being that he is taking on a tough opponent in Danny Garcia because Danny is by far no walk in the park for anybody. We are all gonna get our answers come fight night when him and Danny share the ring”.

After hearing from both parties it is good to know that both teams are on the same page and neither team is shying away from a potential mega-fight.

Shawn Porter

“If that’s a fight that he wants to pursue then we’ll talk about it and so be it. I don’t duck no fighter I never turned down a fighter so I won’t stop now. My whole thing was, you know I’m looking for the titles, I’m trying to become undisputed… but my whole thing was before he lost and before him and Errol Spence there was no mention of us having a unification fight no nothing. I feel some type of way about that, it don’t matter at the end of the day we all gotta fight each other and I’m willing to fight everybody.”

When asked about fighting the winner of the Jose Ramirez Jr and Josh Taylor in the junior welterweight division Crawford said that he will “crush em, simple, whenever their ready ill crush em, simple”.

Bob Arum recently told ESPN that “we’re going to have Terence fight in September or October, period,” Arum noted that. “We’re looking to either match him with Pacquiao, Kell Brook, Ugas, or Porter.” Errol Spence Jr is, for now, out the picture as the WBC has ordered him to fight challenger Danny Garcia.

The fighters that Bob Arum has given us are all serious contenders. Kell Brook will be the most likely candidate for a warm up fight to remove any ring rust Crawford may have due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

My name is Gurpreet Shubh, it has been a huge dream of mine to establish myself as a well-respected boxing reporter for a major broadcaster. After a brief meeting with the sport in 2017, I immediately fell in love with the sport, training under Welsh boxing professional John Kaighan and Jimmy Bromfield who have both been the reason for the production of multiple Welsh champions: Chris Ware to name one. Surrounded by a wealth of knowledge, I had no choice but to soak up every ounce of information I could recollect. Understanding the sport on a deeper level, I was able to read between the lines of the fight itself and begin to breakdown the fight. Something has clicked, this was my lightbulb moment. I believed at this moment I could pair my degree in English Literature and Creative writing with my love for the sport of boxing. I hope we as enthusiasts of boxing we can share our ideas together.
