Leeds United Just 1 Point Away From Return To Premier League

The Championship: Leeds United Need One Point

Leeds United moved to within a solitary point of Premier League football once more, ending a 16 year wait for top flight football at Elland Road. It was an own goal from Barnsley’s Michael Solibauer, that moved the Yorkshire club to the brink of their long awaited return. During a nervy night at Elland Road, what should have been a straight forward victory in a clash of top against bottom, was anything but. Marcelo Bielsa’s men were not at their convincing best throughout and perhaps could count themselves lucky to come away with all three points. Leeds could now be marching on to the Premier League, should West Brom fail to beat Huddersfield on Friday night.

West Brom have already dropped points this week in their pursuit of Leeds United, after a goalless draw at home to Fulham. Slaven Bilic’s men lacked conviction against a hard working, play-off bound Fulham side. Now the Baggies’ will have to get back to winning ways, not only to keep Leeds in their sights, but also to stave on the oncoming Brentford.

Brentford inevitably kept up their charge for automatic promotion with another 1-0 win, this time over Preston North End. An early Ollie Watkins goal on Wednesday night at Griffin Park was enough to move the Bees to within just one point of second place West Brom with two games remaining.

Elsewhere on Tuesday, there was an important win for Middlesbrough as they beat Reading 2-1 away from home. Strikers Ashley Fletcher and Patrick Roberts with the goals that move Boro’ five points clear of the drop zone.

In the highlight of the week however, Wigan, who went into administration last week, scored a staggering eight goals at home against Hull City. Seven nil up at half time against a hopeless Hull side, Wigan alleviated some of their relegation fears ahead of their 12 point deduction. A Kieran Dowell hat-trick doing the damage for the Latics at the DW Stadium. For Hull City however, their issues stretch further than just this latest humiliation, with two fixtures left they sit in the final relegation place, three points adrift of safety.

Cardiff City earned a valuable three points with a 2-1 win over Derby County at home. Canadian Junior Hoilett and the experienced Lee Tomlin both on the score-sheet for the Welsh side. 19-year-old Jason Knight scored for the second game in a row in a losing cause. This win means Cardiff moved two points clear of play-off chasers Millwall.

On Wednesday, Nottingham Forest hosted Swansea City, with the home side looking to secure their play-off place. On-loan Rhian Brewster opened the scoring for the Swans’ before Sammy Ameobi levelled after 20 minutes. Moments before half time Andre Ayew put the visitors back in front from the penalty spot, boosting the hopes of a late play-off push. However, it was Sammy Ameobi once more who had the final say as he equalised once more. The point keeps Forest firmly in the play-off places, and puts a huge dent in the Swansea hopes.
