Barcelona

Real Madrid Champions of Spain ?

With round 33 of La Liga at it’s end, Real Madrid took on 6th place Getafe at the Alfredo Di Stefano, winning 1-0. Real’s rivals, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, recently played out a 2-2 draw. Barcelona fans would have liked to see their team back on top of La Liga, but instead they find themselves four points behind Real Madrid. Los Blancos’ win takes them four points clear of Barcelona with only five matches left to be played. At the moment, Barcelona look unlikely to close the gap, and here’s why.

The remaining fixtures

Barcelona have two home matches against Espanyol and Osasuna, where they would expect results. They also have three away matches against Villarreal, Valladolid and Alaves. The Catalan side will have to be at their best for all of the remaining fixtures. With their poor away form, Barcelona may give up even more points in their hunt for a third successive La Liga title.

Barcelona will take on Villareal next. Last time they played, Barcelona won 2-1

Real Madrid, on the other hand, face Alaves and Villarreal at home, and Athletic Club, Granada and Leganes away from home. As things stand, the ball is in Real Madrid’s court, only they can deny themselves from winning their first La Liga since the 2016-17 season. Frustratingly for Barcelona fans, Real do not look like they will let this chance go and they have won all of their games since the restart.

Even Barcelona’s manager, Quique Setien, says that it is looking less and less likely that they will catch their galactico rivals. He said:“It’s getting more and more complicated. Dropping these points means that we are moving away from the possibility of winning this title” after the draw against Atletico Madrid.

The ongoing problems at Barcelona

Barcelona are having trouble within the club itself. With the transfer of Arthur Melo to Juventus, it has been reported that the players are not happy with the board. This is not the only problem at Barcelona, recent results have led to reports suggesting Quique Setien might be shown the door. It is being reported that the matches against Atletico and Villarreal will decide his future at the club.

With players not happy about tactical decisions and the coaching techniques of Setien, their problems are constantly being added to. For example, Antoine Griezmann is not getting enough time and not taking his chances when he is given them.“I understand it’s tough for Griezmann to come on when so little time left. I will speak with him tomorrow, I won’t say sorry because [it’s about] decisions. But I understand he may feel bad and I feel bad for him because he’s a great person and professional.” said Quique Setien when asked about Griezmann. Frenkie De Jong being injured is also a big loss for Barcelona, given that he was one of their best midfielders this season.

Real Madrid at their best

Real Madrid have been playing with a motive, motive to win La Liga and be crowned champions again. Karim Benzema, undoubtedly their best player since the restart, has been putting in some good performances. Not only is he scoring goals, he is also providing exquisite assists. Sergio Ramos is showing everyone why he is one of the best defenders and captains in the footballing world. The Real Madrid centre-back has scored three goals since football resumed.

Zinedine Zidane clearly did his homework before the games started and it’s visible through the performances of his team. The galacticos are now in a position where losing the title would be considered a failure. Even if Barcelona manage to win all of their remaining matches, they won’t be able to dethrone Real from that top spot if Madrid match them. However, any slip-up from Real could shatter their dreams of becoming La Liga Champions.

There is a lot left to play for in La Liga. Whether it is Barcelona or Real Madrid, La Liga is still awaiting it’s winner.
