Everything you need to know about the Match: Champions For Charity

The Match – Champions for Charity: All You Need to Know.

There is yet more competitive golf to look forward to this weekend as we see four sporting legends tee it up at Medalist Golf Club in Florida.

The $10 million charity event, organised to aid Covid-19 relief, will feature two of the biggest names in golf, partnered with two American Footballing legends: Tiger Woods teams up with two-time Super Bowl winner Peyton Manning whilst Phil Mickelson and six-time Super Bowl winner Tom Brady pair together.

The Match is expected to be watched by millions around the world, so here is all the information you need to know for this Sunday.

The Match – Brief History

If you’re reading this and thinking ‘The Match’ sounds familiar, you would be correct. In 2018 Mickelson faced Woods in a winner-takes-all match in Las Vegas with the event receiving mixed reviews.

There were a lot of positives to the event. Players were mic’d up, which allowed viewers to get up close and personal. However, many people felt that the $9 million prize was an obscene amount of money for one person to win, particularly as it had been put up by sponsors and not the players themselves.

The recent Covid-19 outbreak has shown golf in a new light and it has become a shining beacon in the sporting world. The charity match between Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, Rickie Fowler and Matt Wolff raised an incredible $5.5 million, all of it going to Covid-19 relief.

This weekend, the match is expected to raise over $10 million for relief efforts, plus all four of the participants have donated personal prizes that will raise millions towards the cause as viewers will have the chance to enter into a live raffle during rounds.

The Format

The event will comprise of a Best Ball format on the front nine (best score on the hole) and a Modified Alternate Shot format on the back nine (both players tee off and then alternate shots on the selected drives).

The aim of changing the format is to make it more exciting for the viewers at home and to see how the less experienced golfers, Brady and Manning, will cope as the pressure changes from the front nine to the back nine.

In addition, there will also be a number of side challenges, including a one club challenge, where participants must use the same club for the duration of the hole.

The Players

Tiger Woods: Arguably the greatest golfer of all time, he ties the record for most PGA Tour wins (82), as well as holding 15 Major championships (the 2nd highest of all time). Woods also has also held the World Number One spot for the longest total amount of time.

Peyton Manning: A two-time Super Bowl champion and member of Cherry Hills Country Club and Augusta, according to the USGA he holds a 6.4 handicap. He is regarded as a steady player, rarely scoring a double bogey or worse on the course. Manning is also known as a big trash talker, so will bring some entertainment to the event.

Phil Mickelson: Has 44 PGA Tour wins, including five Major championships. The 49-year-old has spent over 700 weeks in the world’s top 10 and has represented the USA a record 12 times at the Ryder Cup. Known for his ‘risk and reward’ approach, the American defeated Woods in The Match in 2018.

Tom Brady: Holds the record for the most Super Bowl wins as a player (six). Brady’s official handicap is 8.1 but will play off 11 at Medalist due to its difficulty rating. In 2019 the American carded 10 rounds of golf during the year, with most around the mid 80’s to low 90’s.

The Course & Broadcast Team

Medalist will be the host to this huge event. An exclusive members club, the course has seen some of golf’s biggest players and has one of the largest professional memberships in the world. Players like Woods, Rickie Fowler, Brooks Koepka, and more than a dozen others are members of this prestigious club.

With such a grand location many broadcasting channels like CNN International, TBS and TruTV will be showing the event live.

Another interesting twist is the addition of the on-course reporter. Justin Thomas is a Medalist member and current professional golfer who knows Woods and Mickelson very well. Thomas will hopefully share a joke or two, and give some useful insights.

Coverage of the match in the UK will start Sunday 24th May at 8pm on CNN International; it’s expected to be a great showcase of competitive sport and for a good cause.
