Manchester United beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1
Rashford double sinks Spurs on Mourinho’s return to Old Trafford
Jose Mourinho suffered his first defeat under his reign at Spurs which coincided with his first trip back to Old Trafford since he was sacked by Manchester United 12 months ago.
The much needed win for United saw Spurs’ three match winning streak come to a halt as well as alleviating the pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s shoulders following some speculation of his job being at risk.
Rashford finding his form
Rashford broke the deadlock early on in the 6th minute by beating Spurs goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga near post with his strike. Rashford nearly doubled the lead with a tremendous strike from outside of the box in the 27th minute, Gazzaniga getting his hand to the shot to produce a superb save.
Dele Alli levelled the scoring in the 39th minute with a fine piece of skill inside the United box, his first touch beating Ashley Young and Fred, before cooly clotting the ball past David De Gea.
A Rashford penalty blasted Manchester United back into the lead, after he was tripped inside the box by Moussa Sissoko within the first ninety seconds of the second half.
Rashford’s double now sees him in fine form scoring 12 goals in 13 games for club and country. His current 9 goals in the Premier League this season see’s him just one goal shy of his season best.
Manchester United bypassed Spurs in the table, seeing them climb up to 6th. While Mourinho’s Spurs now sit one point behind them in 8th.
The result comes as a huge boost for Solskjær’s United, especially leading up to the Manchester Derby on Saturday.
